History Of The Teddy Bear

Very few people are aware of how a teddy bear actually came to be, so here is a quick history lesson for those of you that don’t know the history behind the bear.

The teddy bear dates back to Theodore Roosevelt who was nicknamed “Teddy” after refusing to kill a bear they had captured on a hunting trip. The story soon got out and it caught the eye of political cartoonist Clifford K. Berryman.

Morris Michtom who was a local toy shop owner saw the illustration and created a small bear very similar to the one from the illustration. He placed it in his shop window with a sign “Teddy’s Bear.”

The teddy bear toy gained popularity and demand grew so much that it prompted Michton to ask President Roosevelt for his permission to officially name the toy Teddy Bear.

And as they say, the rest is history. The teddy bear is still as popular today and even with all the technologically advanced toys that our children have access to, the humble teddy bear has still not lost its place in their hearts.

The Importance Of Naming A Teddy Bear

Giving a teddy bear a name makes it more real and relatable for a child. It provides them with a sense of ownership and friendship for that bear.

Children have fantastic imaginations and they use them for everything. But adults often do not see what the child’s imagination does so having a teddy bear offers them the perfect playmate.

Imaginative play is crucial to the healthy development of children, it helps to boost problem-solving skills, language, behavior, and even their understanding of the world around them.

So by giving their teddy a name you provide them with far more than just a name. With that name comes a personality with all the quirks and individuality of our own personalities. Which in turn provides your child with the perfect playmate!

Top Tips For Naming A Teddy Bear

Children are often quick to choose a name for any of their toys and yes they are often the very obvious names such as Bear or Teddy. But this is a testament to their own innocence and also their own age and stage of development.

But if you are struggling to come up with a name here are a few top tips to help you out.

1. Keep it simple

Remember the age of the child that you are gifting the bear to. It is no good choosing a complicated name that they are unable to pronounce.

Children often create this connection to their teddy purely from their name, so if they have a name that they are unable to pronounce then it is unlikely that this connection will be formed.

If the name you have chosen is difficult to pronounce maybe you can still use it as long as it comes with an easier to pronounce nickname.

For example, if you wanted to name the bear Winnie the Pooh after the famous children’s book character then a great nickname would be Pooh.

This would be easy enough for a young child to pronounce and so will help them to form that special connection.

2. Don’t overthink the name

It is great to come up with the perfect name but the name that children often pick for their toys is simple and usually relates to some sort of physical characteristic or to a character that is their favorite at that particular time.

For example, my son had a blue teddy bear and when asked to name him, yes you guessed it he called him “Blue.”

Now, this teddy bear is his safety blanket, it goes everywhere with him and is tucked up in bed every night with him too. He has created this bond with this teddy and it provides him with comfort and yet his name is simple and in fact very basic.

So my advice would be if you think of the perfect name but your child is not keen just let it go. Don’t push for the name that you like as this may impact the connection that your child has with it.

3. Is there a theme?

Many teddy bears are given at a certain time of the year such as Valentine’s Day or Christmas. They tend to have a theme that coincides with that holiday such as hearts, Christmas hats, reindeer antlers, or skates for example.

The bear may be dressed as a policeman or firefighter – chat with your child about these themes and try to pick a name that is in keeping with the theme.

Do be warned that children will very often not play along with this and go in the completely opposite direction.

The Final Thought

The humble teddy bear has a long history of providing friendship and comfort to millions of children all over the world.

They come in a huge variety of colors, styles, and materials meaning that you should have no problem finding the perfect teddy for your little one.

And once the perfect teddy is found that perfect name will easily follow. Your child will then have a fantastic playmate that will allow their imagination to blossom!
