How To Return Diapers To Walmart (Exchange and Receipt Policy)

Newborn babies need their diapers changed a lot. In fact, many new parents are shocked to see just how many diapers their tiny bundle of joy can get through in a single day.

Many expectant parents buy several packets of diapers before their baby was even been born and diaper hampers make a great baby shower gift.

However, parents can occasionally end up with a surplus of diapers in a size that is either too big or too small for their baby. The good news is, if your diapers were purchased at Walmart, it is very easy for you to return them.

You can return and exchange diapers at Walmart up to 90 days after purchase. Walmart will accept returns without a receipt but the diaper packaging must be unopened.

If it has been more than 90 days since you purchased the diapers, Walmart may still return them if they have not been opened and pass their verification scan. Diapers returned to the store can either be exchanged for store credit or a refund.

How To Return Diapers To Walmart?

Babies grow quickly and they won’t be wearing those tiny size 1 diapers for long. If you have stockpiled packets and packets of newborn-size diapers and you know your baby is never going to get through them all, you might want to try returning them to the store.

Returning diapers to Walmart is really easy, especially if you have a receipt. If you have ended up with too many diapers, just head into your local Walmart store and return them.

The Walmart exchange and return policy states that items (not including the exceptions stated in the policy) bought in-store or online can be returned to any Walmart store within 90 days of purchase.

You can either upload your paper receipt to your Walmart app or on the Walmart website. You will then be issued with a return barcode and an email confirming your return.

Finally, you will need to take your diapers in their unopened packaging into a store with your confirmation email.

If you don’t have a Walmart account, you can just grab your receipt, your original payment card, the packet of diapers and head straight to the customer service desk in your local Walmart store.

All you need to do is ask the employee for a refund or exchange and they will happily arrange that for you right there and then.

Can I Get Store Credit Or A Cash Refund At Walmart?

When you return your diapers to Walmart and if you have a receipt, you have a couple of options when it comes to their return and exchange policy.

Store credit

When returning an item to the store, you can ask for store credit. You can use this to buy anything else in store with the same value as the diapers you returned.

As Walmart doesn’t really allow a straight-up exchange (this seems to vary from store to store and be at the manager’s digression), when swapping your diapers for a bigger size, you will most likely be given a gift card with store credit that you can then use to purchase the bigger diapers.

Refund

You can receive a cash refund when returning diapers with a receipt and the original payment card. The refund will go back into your bank account and you can choose to spend it whenever and wherever you wish.

Can I Return Diapers To Walmart Without A Receipt?

When you are buying a million and one things for your new baby, sometimes receipts can get lost. If you have misplaced your receipt or the diapers were a gift, you can still return them to Walmart.

The returns process is a little more complex than when you have a receipt but it is still fairly quick and straightforward.

When returning diapers to Walmart without a receipt, you will need to bring your valid photo ID into the store. The Walmart employee will check your ID against the details they have about you on their system and if the two matches, your return will be accepted.

What if the diapers were a gift, we hear you ask. In this scenario, Walmart may still accept the return even if you don’t have the receipt.

The Walmart cashier team member will need to verify the diapers are sold by Walmart and can be entered back into their system as a return. Different stores often sell the same brands of diapers but the packet sizes may vary.

It is not a guarantee that Walmart will allow you to return the diapers if they are not a packet currently being sold in store.

Can I Get A Refund or Store Credit At Walmart With No Receipt?

When returning diapers to Walmart without a receipt, there are several options available that are stated in the Walmart return policy.

Here is a list of options you have when returning diapers to Walmart without a receipt:

  • Exchange the item with another item
  • Get a cash refund if the returned item is less than $10
  • Get a Walmart shopping card or gift card if the returned item is equal to or more than $10
  • If available, send the item to the manufacturer for repair

There is no need to panic if you receive twenty packets of newborn nappies at your baby shower, you can return them to Walmart even without the receipt.

The returns process is more straightforward with a receipt though. Do not feel embarrassed to ask your friends and family for their receipt or a gift receipt if they have one.

Can You Return Diapers That Have Been Opened To Walmart?

We’ve all been there. The baby needs a diaper change so we rip into a new packet of the same size they’ve been wearing for weeks, only to discover this size is now too small. Babies grow quickly and they can go up through the diaper sizes surprisingly fast.

If you have only used one or two diapers, you may be contemplating returning the opened packet of diapers to your local Walmart store. Unfortunately, even with a receipt, it is unlikely you are going to be able to return open diapers at Walmart.

Open diapers generally can’t be resold because of federal and state safety and health regulations.

The Walmart return policy states items must be returned in their original packaging. However, if you have opened the packaging, it is unlikely that the item will be cleared for resale.

How Long Can You Return Diapers To Walmart?

Apart from the few exceptions highlighted in their return policy, most items bought in a Walmart store or from Walmart online must be returned within 90 days of purchase.

However, if it has been over 90 days since you purchased the diapers, you may be able to still return them but it will be down to the discretion of your local store manager.

If you have no receipt, you can try out your acting skills and pretend you bought the diapers within the 90-day window.

However, you are only going to get a refund or exchange if the diapers pass the verification process and can be scanned into the Walmart system. You may be in luck but if the diapers do not pass verification, it is unlikely you will be able to return them.

Having your receipt might give you more of a chance of getting a refund after 90 days if say you are only one or two days past the deadline.

Again, it is down to the store manager, they may take pity on you and issue the refund anyway or they might do everything by the book and refuse. You can always try ringing up your local Walmart and asking if they will accept a return after 90 days.

A quick chat on the phone can save you from waiting in a long queue at the store only to be told they can’t accept your return.

What To Do With Unused Diapers?

Ok, so it has been over 90 days and Walmart won’t return all those packets of diapers – what now? There are several things you can do if you have too many diapers:

  • Donate to a local diaper drive
  • Give them to a mommy friend
  • Keep them for your next baby
  • Donate to a Women’s refuge
  • Ask your child’s daycare if they accept diaper donations
  • Make a diaper hamper or diaper cake for a baby shower
  • Ask local homeless shelters if they accept diaper donations
  • Keep them for your baby to use when playing with baby dolls
