When Do Kids Stop Wearing Diapers?

If there is one thing that kids go through a lot, it’s diapers. At some point, you will wonder when do kids stop wearing diapers. Whether if it’s because of its price or it’s almost potty training time, you’re still wondering.

Babies stop wearing diapers when they become infants and are potty trained. However, it is different for every child.

Some kids wearing diapers will be in big kid underwear on their second birthday. Other kids wearing diapers might stay in them until they are three or four. This all depends on the child.

How Soon Can I Ditch The Diapers?

Although it’s impossible to give an exact answer, you can trust that your little one will no longer be one of the kids wearing diapers when they are two at the earliest.

If they are not ready to use the potty at two, trust that they usually are when they’re four. Some are earlier, and some will be later.

Potty Training

Potty training is something that every parent looks forward to being over. It means that your little one is more independent, no more diaper changes for you, and less crying from them.

Potty training is a win-win for everyone! Most babies display certain signs that they are ready to start potty training.

Signs It’s Time To Start Potty Training

Kids wearing diapers will show you several signals that they are ready to use the potty like a big kid.

If you notice that your little one is doing any of these things, don’t ignore them or miss the window for potty training. If you do, it can be more difficult to potty-train them later on.

Signaling They Have A Dirty Diaper

Kids wearing diapers do this in different ways. Some children will pull at their diaper so that it is away from their skin. Others will tell you they have a dirty diaper or cry until they are changed.

If they are uncomfortable in a dirty diaper, they are easier to potty train.

Hiding To Go In Their Diaper

As children grow older, they slowly realize that other people leave the room to use the bathroom. A two-year-old might not head to the bathroom, but they will hide behind a couch or run into the other room to go in their diaper.

Most kids wearing diapers do this when they have to poop. It’s important to note that every kid wearing diapers doesn’t do this.

Fewer Wet Diapers

If your little one suddenly has fewer wet diapers than they did before, that is a sign that they might be able to control their bladder, an essential bodily function that toddlers need to be potty trained.

Interest In The Potty

Kids wearing diapers that are suddenly intrigued by the bathroom and other people’s bathroom habits. They also might be slightly curious about your private parts during this period.

Take them to the bathroom with you if they would like to go, and encourage them to try to use the bathroom after you do. This will help teach them how to use the potty and encourage positive hygiene habits.

Starting Early

Although most first-time parents depend on experience from others or their culture to tell them when to start potty training, there are plenty that jumps on the bandwagon early on.

That’s because potty training early has these benefits:

Easier To Potty Train

When you potty train your little one earlier than two, they can be easier to potty train. This is because your two-year-old is striving for independence, and they are more likely to rebel against potty training.

This ultimately makes it more difficult and leads to it taking longer to potty train your little one. When you start earlier, your kids wearing diapers will enjoy going in the potty.

Better For The Environment

Diapers create a lot of waste. The sooner you ditch the diapers, the more nature friendly it is.

Healthier

When children are potty trained, they are healthier overall. Babies will have fewer diaper rashes, fewer yeast infections, urinary tract infections, and other ailments that kids wearing diapers experience.

Teaching Hygiene

When children are two, they begin to learn table manners. It makes sense to teach them basic hygiene habits, like washing their hands at this time too.

When you potty train your little one, you’ll find that they start to learn better hygiene habits that will last them a lifetime.

Start Pre-school Early

Many pre-schools allow children to start if they are two or three and potty trained. The earlier your little one starts school, the better off they are.

They adjust to the norms of school easier, are more socialized, and learn to listen to teachers sooner, resulting in fewer problems in school later on.

Kids Wearing Diapers Are All Different

One child might be potty trained by two, and another might not be ready until three. Some kids wearing diapers might never seem to have a window where they are interested in going to the bathroom.

My son was one of those. I tried every technique in the book. The only way I potty trained my son was to stay home and go half-naked until he was potty trained. He couldn’t stand peeing on the floor or anywhere else. Once he was no longer wearing a diaper, he was potty trained within a week.

One popular way to encourage children to use the bathroom is to purchase a potty chair they will love to sit on. This usually is enough to entice them into at least sitting on the potty.

When Can Babies Stop Wearing Diapers At Night?

Sometimes, it can take longer for babies to be night time potty trained.

They may no longer be one of the kids wearing diapers during the day, but can’t control their bladder at night yet. This is common in children that are potty trained early because their bladders are so small that they might not wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom.

Some kids wearing diapers will be ready to ditch their night diapers when they are potty trained, and others may take months. When your little one wakes up in the morning with a dry diaper for four days in a row, you can trust that they are ready for underwear at bedtime too.

If they have an accident, encourage going to the bathroom before bed as part of their nighttime routine. You can put them back in diapers for a bit until you are sure that they are ready to stop wearing them.
